A charcoal drawing on paper, from the beginning of the 20th century, representing 3 peasant women dressed in loose clothing and headscarves at work.

Size : 33 cm x 45,5cm

The stylization of the human figure is influenced by cubism and post-impressionism: the features are very geometric and the figures are massive. The drawing is signed lower center: Andrée Karpeles, a French painter who lived for many years in India.

Detailed information on the life of the artist can be obtained thanks to the research of Marie Olivier, currently a student instructor at the INHA library, has produced a research paper on the French painter and engraver Andrée Karpelès.

Andrée Karpelès (Paris, 1885 - Grasse, 1956) is an artist at the heart of Franco-Indian exchanges, close to the School of Bengal, an important figure in the promotion of contemporary Indian art on the French scene. A childhood, spent between Calcutta and Paris, opened the doors of India to him.

Andrée Karpelès embarked on an artistic career and endeavored from the start to represent landscapes and scenes of Indian daily life. From 1906, she exhibited almost every year at the National Salon of Fine Arts, the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants where several of her works were acquired by the State.
