Trinity
18th century
To be restored. There are signs of wear and old restorations. But it is precisely this lived-in aspect that makes this painting fascinating, giving it the charm of an artwork intensely experienced over the centuries as an object of worship and devotion.
Technique: oil on oak wood panel.
Germanic or Central European area.
The Eternal Father, on the right, and the Redeemer, on the left, are depicted seated on clouds. With His right hand, Christ holds the large Cross, and the Eternal Father holds the scepter in His left hand. At the top, in the center, appears the Holy Spirit.
The curious aspect of this painting is the smiling, sweet, and playful expression of the two “male” figures. This suggests a popular art style, whose naivety is appreciated. It is clear that, though simple, the artist knows more refined paintings that were used as prototypes for the iconography and composition. But the artist gives a nearly familial and benevolent touch to the solemn subject.
The antique frame, painted in deep red, is part of the wooden panel’s construction.
Dimensions: height 43 cm x width 26 cm.
