Jehan Frison (1882–1961), author of this Still Life with Rooster and Mushrooms, belonged to the circle of Belgian Fauvism and was a close friend of Rik Wouters. In the early 20th century he often visited Boitsfort, then a green, semi-rural village in Brabant, which had become a vibrant center for fauve painters such as Ferdinand Schirren, Edgard Tytgat, Charles Dehoy, and Auguste Oleffe. It was in this environment that Frison shaped an expressionist style linked to Fauvism, which he developed in the 1930s–40s through still lifes that turned domestic subjects into images of striking modernity.

The canvas shows a domestic rooster alongside mushrooms, rendered with vigorous brushstrokes and bold color contrasts that echo the expressive force of the Brabant Fauves. Rather than a hunting trophy, this is a rustic kitchen scene, reflecting the artist’s focus on everyday life and rural simplicity.

Jehan Frison is represented in Belgian public collections, including the Musée Charlier and the Ixelles Museum, which preserves his 1917 still life Les Concombres.

Born in Brussels in 1882 and died in Linkebeek in 1961, Frison was a painter, engraver, and sculptor.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, remained tied to the circle of Rik Wouters, and throughout his career stayed faithful to Brabant, where he forged a personal style that combined strong painterly matter with the chromatic freedom of Belgian Fauvism.
