Small devotional painting depicting Saint Charles Borromeo with his hands crossed on his chest and his gaze lifted upwards. Archbishop of Milan (1538–1584), he was a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation, took part in the Council of Trent, and promoted deep reforms within the Church. Canonized in 1610, he is venerated as the patron saint of priests, catechists, and of the sick during plague epidemics.
Condition: canvas transferred onto panel, with age-related wear and an antique patina.
