Portrait of a military commander in armor with a marshal's staff.
Dutch School.
Circle of Peter Nason (Amsterdam, 1612 - 1690 The Hague).
Half-length portrait of a character in full armour.
Similar portraits, both for the rocky landscape and for the type of armor and figure position, are typical of the Dutch school of the second half of the 17th century and particularly of the Dutch painter Peter Nason.
Our portrait is part of the series of portraits made during the wars for the throne of England, which in 1689 brought William III of Orange-Nassau to the throne of England.
The figure depicted wears a non-random detail on his arms: a red ribbon bow, a likely sign of belonging to a political and military alignment.
The military baton in the character's hand emphasizes his high position in the military hierarchy.
Oil on canvas.
Relined.
20th century wooden and stucco frame to be restored.
Dimensions with frame: 74cm x 59cm
