Circle of Jan Both ( Utrecht, 1618-1652). Italianate landscape with shepherd and a bridge
Italianate landscape with a bridge, a tower, shepherd and animals.
Entourage of Jan Both (Utrecht, 1618-1652). The 17th century painting.
Dutch school.
The landscape represents the Lazio countryside, probably near Rome, with the bridge over a river. On the shore, to the right of the bridge there is an ancient round tower.
The idealized rocky landscape, with the pink light of the sunset, is animated by the figures of the farmers crossing the bridge.
The cow, the goats, the flock of sheep recall the paintings of Beecham, another Dutchman active in Italy in the 17th century who contributed to the creation of the pictorial movement that blends Nordic naturalism with an idealized vision of the Lazio or Roman countryside. The painting is in a good state of conservation.
It has a carved and gilded wooden and stucco frame from the early 19th century.
