Head Study of a Young Man, France circa 1820–1840, Romantic Academic Circle
Oil on canvas, 50 × 44 cm with frame
Frame in painted wood with traces of gilding
Oil on canvas, French School, dating from the first half of the 19th century. The work belongs to the post-Davidian academic context, defined by a smooth and disciplined painting style in which the pursuit of ideal form blends with a more intimate and romantic sensibility. The modelling of the face, built up through fine translucent layers, demonstrates refined control of tonal values and light.
The natural pose and restrained expression of the sitter reveal an interest in the inner world, characteristic of French art during the Restoration and the July Monarchy.
In excellent condition, with original canvas and stretcher, predating the use of industrially produced canvases.
