Statue of Saint Sebastian in Polychrome Wood - Late 15th Century
Technique: Polychrome wood, gilded on the perizoma around the hips, original gilding, polychromy with restorations but largely original
Late 15th - Early 16th Century
Northern Italy (Lombardy or Veneto)
Dimensions: Height approximately 100 cm
This polychrome wood statue of Saint Sebastian, dating from the late 15th century, is a significant example of erudite Renaissance art. The image of the young man features a haircut typical of the 15th century, with a short fringe and hair falling around the face in a rounded line, reflecting the stylistic trends of Lombardy, Veneto, and Ferrara of the period.
The sculpture exhibits a realistic rendering that, while adhering to elements of naturalism, also incorporates aspects of fantasy. The body is stylized with a lean musculature, emphasizing expressiveness compared to the Florentine classical tradition, reflecting the approach of artists of the time who combined realism with stylization.
In generally good condition, the statue has a largely original polychromy with some visible wear and restorations. Traces of holes on the body symbolize the wounds inflicted by arrows during Saint Sebastian’s martyrdom, known for his intercession against plague and infectious diseases, alongside Saint Roch.
This example of late-Renaissance sacred art is valued for its stylistic and historical complexity.
