Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata
Oil on copper, Flemish school, 17th century
Dimensions: with frame 19 cm x 16 cm, without frame 16 cm x 13 cm
The scene of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata is one of the central themes in Counter-Reformation painting. The anonymous artist followed popular models, inspired by well-known inventions generally attributed to reformist Tuscan mannerists like Santi di Tito or Ludovico Cigoli, with a clear influence of Flemish painting from the period.
The painting stands out for the fine attention to detail, typical of the Flemish school. Saint Francis is depicted in a mystical moment, in ecstasy, receiving the stigmata, with the Seraphim transmitting the signs of the Passion. The divine apparition is accompanied by a celestial light emanating from the sky.
The copper, a precious and refined material, is used with great skill. The work, in exceptional condition, shows a clean and well-preserved patina, testament to the quality of the work and its optimal conservation.
Beautiful patina, exceptional state of conservation.
