The painting captures the Labrador with remarkable precision, highlighting the texture and sheen of its long fur, as well as its distinctive expression and graceful posture. The background features bare trees and an autumnal landscape, a common element in Ferneley's work that adds seasonal and atmospheric depth to the composition while enhancing the prominence of the dog.

The composition is thoughtfully designed to draw attention directly to the Labrador, using the autumnal setting to frame and complement the subject. The portrait carries a narrative quality, with the autumn setting and the Labrador’s poised demeanor suggesting a story that reflects the dog’s role and its environment, adding depth and context to the painting.

The canvas for this portrait was supplied by Charles Roberson & Co., a highly respected art material supplier founded in 1828 in London. Known for the meticulous preparation of its canvases, Roberson & Co. served a prestigious clientele of artists, including notable figures such as J.M.W. Turner, John Constable, Edward Burne-Jones, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This association adds further historical value to the piece.

Presented in a gilded wooden frame, the portrait adds a touch of elegance and complements the historical charm of the painting. This work stands as a significant example of period animal painting, reflecting the sophistication and taste of British and European high society of the time. It represents a valuable addition for collectors and enthusiasts of historical art.
