Pair of Japanese Textile Panels in Yuzen Birodo Velvet with Traditional Landscapes

Period: Late 19th - Early 20th Century
Japan (likely Kyoto)
Dimensions: H 52 cm x W 55 cm each
Satin Velvet (yuzen birodo)
Style: Asian art

This pair of Japanese textile panels depicts serene landscapes featuring traditional houses, trees, and a bridge, evoking a tranquil and contemplative atmosphere. Crafted using the yuzen birodo technique, they combine the softness of satin velvet with hand-painted decorations applied using natural resins and delicate pigments.
The yuzen birodo technique, which flourished mainly in Kyoto during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, required exceptional skill to preserve sections of the velvet and create intricate, light-reflecting designs. This complex method, now lost, represents one of the finest achievements in Japanese textile craftsmanship of the era.

The panels are in good condition, with the velvet retaining its softness and the decorative details well preserved. Minor signs of wear, consistent with age, do not detract from the overall elegance of the pieces.
