Ligurian Alps landscape with snow-capped peaks tinted by pink light. By Cesare Bentivoglio (Genoa,1868-1952)
Ligurian Alps landscape with snow-capped peaks tinted by pink light. It's an oil on canvas depicting a mountain scene with a cabin.
The painting is of a rare, almost square format: it measures 101cm x 99cm with frame and is signed by the author in the bottom right corner. The subject is typical of Bentivoglio's production; he loved painting the Ligurian Alps using impressionist and divisionist techniques.
The painting is characterized by a palette of vibrant and luminous colors, creating a harmonious contrast between the green meadows, the blue sky, and the pink snow-capped peaks. The cabin is placed at the center of the composition.
The mountain could be Mount Antola, one of the highest peaks of the Ligurian Alps, which Bentivoglio painted multiple times.
Cesare Bentivoglio was an Italian painter born in Genoa in 1868 and died in the same city in 1952. He was self-taught but also studied under Antonio Varni and Giuseppe Sacheri. His favorite subjects were landscapes, seascapes (often depicting the Ligurian coast: Cinque Terre, Rapallo, Santa Margherita, Portofino, etc.), mountains, port views, still lifes, and hunting scenes. He was influenced by the Grigio School or School of Grays: a Ligurian artistic movement that, in the second half of the 19th century, renewed the approach to landscape, adhering to the anti-academic and naturalistic artistic vision then in vogue in France.
