Some historical notes on coral carving near Naples.
The production and carving of coral in the 19th century in Naples and Torre del Greco is an ancient and noble tradition, which originated from the migration of Sicilian coral masters, fleeing from the persecutions of the Spaniards. Coral, also called “red gold”, was highly appreciated by the noble and religious classes, who used it to create jewels, rosaries, pendants and other works of art.
King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon favored the development of the coral industry, entrusting Paolo Bartolomeo Martin, a French merchant, with the task of training young apprentices and extending the art of coral to Torre del Greco. This Vesuvian town soon became the main center of coral processing, thanks to the skill of its fishermen and its artisans, who specialized in refined and original techniques.
The coral of Torre del Greco had international fame, especially thanks to Carolina Bonaparte, wife of Joachim Murat, who showed it off in her public appearances.
