Louis Braun was the most important Bavarian military painter, who also studied in theaters of war. The painting is probably linked to Braun's time on the battlefields of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and is not signed as a study.

Louis Braun was born in Schwäbisch Hall, Württemberg, and was educated in Munich and Paris.
He followed the Austrian army as an illustrator during the Danish War of 1864 and painted several battle scenes for Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria.
He also accompanied the German armies in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 and exhibited his paintings entitled "The entry of Mecklenburg troops into Orléans", "The capitulation of Sedan", "The battle of Sedan" (later exhibited in Frankfurt am Main and elsewhere in the form of a panorama), “The Germans at Versailles” and “The Entry of the German Army into Paris”. The great success of the "Battle of Sedan", in panoramic form, encouraged Braun (who in 1902 was a professor in Munich) to produce several other works of the same description.
