Flemish school.
Dated 1608.
Male portrait in black suit.
Oil painting on canvas.

Dimensions:
20th century frame, but in an antique style.
There are some pictorial retouches.
Painting in good condition, already restored.
The portrait represents a man, with great expressiveness and realism in the face. His face lived, intelligent, intense.
The clothing with sober colors: black suit and white collar with fine lace  brings to mind the portraits of the second half of the 16th and early 17th centuries of both the Flemish school and Flemish artists active in England, a plausible hypothesis also for our portrait. (For example, the alleged portrait of the writer Sheakspear is a famous example, similar in setting, style, composition).
At the top left there is an inscription with gold characters which speaks of the date of creation of the painting: year 1608. At the top right: age L (means 50 years with Roman numerals). But the most suggestive and enigmatic inscription can be seen on the left at half height: there are letters, cone dots, it is a partially legible word, perhaps BRUGGE? . At first analysis, the whole appears as a monogram of the Artist, yet to be discovered.
