Gladiator from Borghese Gallery.
Mid XIX century academic drawing.

Black charcoal on paper.

Dimensions : cm 65 x cm 48

Statue of a gladiator from the Borghese Gallery.

Excellent conservation conditions.

This drawing represents one of the many examples of academic exercises based on the most important plaster statues.

Plaster casts from nineteenth-century academies often drew inspiration not only from classical antiquity but also from the works of great masters of the past, such as Michelangelo.

Students focused on the chiaroscuro effect and detailed representation of the face.

The drawing of gladiator is executed with mastery using charcoal, giving athletic body a majestic, realistic, and three-dimensional appearance, while the curly hair is rendered with a grisaille effect.

Represents the full-length statue of a naked athlete in the act of parrying a shot with the shield.
The shield of which only the bracelet is left is missing, and the sword of which the handle is left in the right hand is missing.

This drawing is a part of collection of 19th century charcoal drawings from the Accademia Albertina of Turin.
