Italian comedians: Pulcinella "Mangiamaccheroni", Arlecchino, Pantalone, Balanzone.
Characters from the commedia dell'arte.
Painting from the late XVII - early 18th century.
In antique wood frame.

Oil on canvas

54cm x 42  cm

Represents the theatrical scene with Pulcinella eating pasta with his hands.

Hunger and macaroni are Pulcinella's obsessions. And he was a "dodge fatigue" character.
Around him: on the left - Pantalone, a character of Venetian origins, on the right with a colored dress - Harlequin, originally from Bergamo, and in the center with the black dress Balanzone , of Bolognese origins.
In the eighteenth century pasta had a strong diffusion in Naples and in the Amalfi coast area. Pasta could be bought in the kiosks along the streets (how many prints and paintings of the time!) And was eaten with your hands, without seasoning or sprinkled with pepper and with white cheese.

The painting has had some restorations and the canvas is relined.
