Adoration of three wise men, Epiphany.
Octagonal painting on copper. 17th century.
The painting depicts 3 kings who came from distant countries, dressed in cloaks in precious fabrics and adorned with crowns to bring gifts to the Child Jesus.
Condition: Fully restored
Material: Oil painting on copper
Length: 48cm
Diameter: 48cmPainted in an octagonal format, popular in the 17th century. State of preservation: medium, due to the characteristics of copper, support that by its nature cannot give stability to paint such as wood or canvas. Some pictorial retouching is present. The three Magi represent various continents: one of them is European, another represents Africa with its dark skin, and another represents the East (with Semitic characters). A small paggio, as in a fairy tale, supports the crown of the older magician, who the other carries an ermine fur collar, a symbol of a ruler. On the right, a young mother Madonna, sitting with the baby and in the company of St. Joseph. During the restoration, a wooden lining was created behind for greater protection of the copper plate, which leaves a "window" to observe the material of the copper support.
