Between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, under Louis XIV, vast shipyards and fortified harbors were established at Rochefort, Brest, Amsterdam, and Hamburg, transforming maritime painting into a genre that combined technical precision and state prestige, celebrating the power of northern European seafaring nations.

The composition depicts a bustling harbor animated by three-masted warships and merchant vessels, their massive hulls and richly decorated sterns crowned with carved lion figureheads. The ships are characteristic of the 1690–1720 period, with high vertical sterns, square sails, and heavy proportions, belonging to the transitional stage before the lighter frigates of the later 18th century. Elle's early and mature portraits (for example, the portrait of Louis XIV in armor, Metz, Musée de la Cour d'Or) demonstrate how great the influence of his father's work was on the artist. The artist uses well-established (but somewhat archaic) portraiture from around 1620, which is characterized by a somewhat elongated silhouette of the figure, smooth light and shadow modeling and an extremely generalized interpretation of the face. The artist remained devoted to this scheme for quite a long time, despite the fact that the portrait formula in France was undergoing significant changes.
All the more unexpected is the radical change in the style of Elle's portraits in the last years of his life, in the 1680s. This was connected with the arrival of the greatest portrait painter Louis Ferdinand Voet in Paris. Voet 's manner, which Pope Innocent XI called "an instrument of voluptuousness" (which was the reason that Voet was banned from working in Rome), turned out to be incredibly in tune with the artistic atmosphere of Paris. El's style begins to resemble Foote's work - his painting becomes more transparent, incredible freedom in technique appears, and his images are filled with sensual charm.
A small portrait of an unknown lady from the collection of Alina Malova’s gallery is an excellent example of El’s late work. The painting technique amazes with its virtuosity; it is free and artistic. The modeling of the form is built using several artistic techniques at once. Using light, the artist determines the volume, but completes the form using the non-finito effect. The figurative interpretation of the model is interesting. A characteristic feature of Elle's entire work was his very personal and intimate view of the model. This depiction may suggest a theme of spiritual journey or connection between contrasting elements, such as the celestial (Eros's wings) and the aquatic (the dolphin).

In this painting, Eros is portrayed with a red body, evoking the element of fire, symbolizing passion, energy, and transformation. This detail accentuates the dynamic nature of the character, highlighting the transformative power of love and desire that Eros embodies.

The artist Marco Silombria is known for his ability to blend mythological elements with a modern aesthetic, creating works that serve as visual meditations on myths and their deep and often complex meanings. By using mixed techniques and diverse materials, Silombria manages to give a contemporary dimension to ancient themes, resonating with modern existential issues.

The painting is likely dated to the recent decades, a period during which Silombria has intensely explored mythological themes, often drawing inspiration from ancient sources like Greek vases and kraters. These ancient artifacts, dedicated to mythological figures such as Dionysus and his followers, become tools in Silombria's hands for broader reflection on identity and transformation. The use of specific colors and techniques, such as black, gold, or blue, in contrast or dialogue with different materials, is typical of his works, which aim to explore the duality and complexity of human and divine nature.

In this context, the painting is not just a representation of Eros and the dolphin, but an invitation to reflect on how myths can still speak to our contemporary experiences and sensitivities.

About artist:

Marco Silombria, an influential figure in Italian Pop Art, was born in Savona in 1936 and passed away in Albissola in 2017. His career spanned several decades and was marked by a remarkable versatility, making significant contributions to painting, sculpture, and advertising. Silombria began his artistic journey under the tutelage of renowned artists Emilio Scannavino and Lucio Fontana, whose guidance helped shape his early style and approach to art.

In the late 1960s, Silombria established himself in Turin, a city that became the backdrop for his dynamic career in both art and advertising. He worked with prominent figures like Armando Testa, creating iconic campaigns for major Italian brands such as Fiat, Gallo Rice, and Facis. His work for these companies not only showcased his innovative graphic design skills but also played a pivotal role in defining the visual identity of these brands during a transformative era in Italian marketing.

Transitioning to fine art in the 1980s, Silombria embraced a distinctive style that blended elements of Pop Art and Neo-Dadaism. His paintings often featured openly homoerotic themes, making bold statements through vibrant colors and reinterpretations of classical subjects. This period saw him exploring the rich mythological traditions of Greek and Roman art, reimagining figures like Eros, Dionysus, and Saint Sebastian with a modern, provocative twist.

Silombria's commitment to social and cultural causes was equally notable. He was a key figure in the F.U.O.R.I. (Fronte Unitario Omosessuale Rivoluzionario Italiano), Italy's first gay rights movement founded by Angelo Pezzana. He contributed significantly to the movement's visual identity, creating iconic graphics and donating artworks that celebrated LGBTQ+ themes. His involvement with the Turin Radical Party and initiatives like the first homosexual cinema review, "From Sodom to Hollywood," highlighted his role as a pioneer in advocating for gay rights and visibility.

Collectors and art enthusiasts are drawn to Silombria's work for its historical significance and bold artistic expression. His pieces, which range from playful advertising graphics to profound and introspective paintings, offer a unique insight into the cultural and social shifts of 20th-century Italy. Silombria's art is not only a reflection of his times but also a celebration of individuality and freedom, making it a valuable addition to any collection that seeks to capture the essence of modern Italian art and history.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0572/8200/3151/files/E909DA3D-F527-4F59-B3A2-E36CD54275FA.jpg?v=1721908168
kpm-berlin-porcelain-figurine-beggar-woman-with-children
KPM Berlin Porcelain Figurine: "Beggar Woman with Children"

KPM Berlin Porcelain Figurine: "Beggar Woman with Children"

Production: 19th century, modeled around 1775, during the reign of Frederick the Great.

Mark: cobalt blue scepter under glaze, used until 1837.

Manufacturer: KPM Berlin.

In good condition, but with a missing detail: the thumb of the hand is missing.

Porcelain, hard paste, hand-painted.
Height: 18.5 cm, width: 8.5 cm.

The figurine depicts a beggar woman with two children.
